Interview with H.E. Dr. Abdullah Al-Harrasi, Minister of Information, Oman

JT: How is the Ministry of Information supporting Oman’s Vision 2040 through its strategies and initiatives?

Al-Harrasi: Since the 1970s, the Ministry has played a pivotal role in shaping Oman’s global image, aligning its strategies with national development goals. It works closely with state agencies to promote a unified national brand and effectively communicates Oman’s progress through television, radio, print, and digital media. Public engagement is key. Dedicated programs educate citizens on government initiatives, while interactive media ensures younger audiences connect with Vision 2040. Real-time sign language translation enhances accessibility.

JT: What role do you see the digital economy and digital innovation play in Oman’s development?

Al-Harrasi: Oman’s digital transformation and sustainability efforts are central to Vision 2040. The National Program for Digital Economy aims to increase the sector’s GDP contribution from 2% in 2021 to 10% by 2040, with investments in AI, big data, and automation modernizing services and infrastructure. The Ministry integrates these advancements into media, enhancing content production and audience reach. Oman’s leadership in green hydrogen and renewables further underscores its commitment to sustainability and economic diversification.

JT: How does the Ministry contribute to communicating Oman’s progress locally and internationally?

Al-Harrasi: A core function of the Ministry is fostering trust between the government and citizens through open dialogue and transparent communication. Media platforms facilitate public engagement, while investigative journalism highlights key societal issues. Oman’s media landscape balances freedom of expression with national identity and ethical standards. The New Media Law (Royal Decree 58/2024) reinforces media freedoms while ensuring accountability, aligning with global best practices. On the international front, the Ministry strengthens Oman’s reputation through strategic media partnerships and campaigns. The National Promotional Identity of Oman initiative unifies communication efforts, while international press visits—hosting over 100 journalists this year—offer firsthand exposure to Oman’s economic progress and cultural richness.

JT: What are your expectations for Oman’s participation in Expo 2025 Osaka?

Oman’s participation in Expo 2025 Osaka further elevates its global presence. Under the theme “A Tale of Land, Water, and People,” the pavilion will highlight Oman’s leadership in sustainability, innovation, and economic diversification, reinforcing its role as a forward-looking, globally engaged nation. Oman looks forward to strengthening its bilateral relationship with Japan through Expo 2025 – and seeks to strengthen partnerships with other likeminded countries.
